Mimi's Summer Day Camp - Our Senses (Touch) - Thursday

Thursday, June 21, 2018

We're still exploring our sense of touch - so one of the best ways to do that is to make Oobleck! A substance that can be hard, soft, wet and dry all at the same time! Amazing!

Joss mixed one cup of corn starch with one cup of water, then chose her color (yellow, of course!) to mix in.

We stopped several times to get a good "feel" each of our ingredients.

Next, I put about 8 little items in a brown paper bag, then Joss put her hand in with out looking, and tried to tell me what each one was just by "feel."  She got about half right the first time, then when we did it again, she got all but one, so her memory is pretty good, too!

After lunch she cut out a paper hand and glued different textures to each of the fingers. As you can see, she also did some watercolor painting for a while.

(This was glued down upside down, she really didn't write those numbers backwards.)
Waiting while Grumpy gets the pool ready....
And finally we had a nice long swim!  She was loving all the one on one attention she was getting this week!

Mimi's Summer Day Camp - Our Senses (Touch) - Tuesday

Tuesday, June 19, 2018

This week we only have one camper -- Jossie! KT is going to another camp at the San Antonio Zoo this week. I'm sure she's having a great time learning about everything "behind the scenes" at the zoo!

This week we're talking all about our sense of touch.   After coloring another page in her 5 Senses booklet, we did an experiment with how we discover the temperature of things with our hands. I loaded 4 cups up with hot, very warm, warm and cold water, and Joss had to line them up in order of hottest to coldest.

We took our usual trip to the library, and Joss spent some time picking out some books to read. We read a few while we were there, too!

After lunch Joss and I went upstairs and we picked out several fabrics with different textures to create a patchwork cloth of different textures.  We had smooth, silky, rough, scratchy, fluffy -- all kinds of textures.
Since it was overcast today, the pool was so so so cold, we decided to stay in and read our books from the library and watch some television together.  Then we left for home a little early to get a slushy at Sonic on the way home.

Mimi's Summer Day Camp - Our Senses (Taste) - Thursday

Thursday, June 14, 2018

This is how Joss looked when she showed up for camp this morning.... crazy hair in sunlight.

We're still talking all about our sense of taste this week, and Joss is creating a little booklet of all of her senses.  She decorated the cover while I was getting supplies set out.
We started with a jelly bean tasting activity.  Joss glued jelly beans of every color on a page, and then an extra one to taste.  Do yellow jelly beans always taste like lemon? Are green ones apple, or lime? What flavor are red jelly beans?

Some jelly beans don't taste too great - she really didn't like the popcorn ones!

I wrote the flavors down and Joss wanted to write them also.  She's very into writing letters right now - and can sound out most letters.  She's gonna be a reader soon.

Later in the day we did a popcorn activity.  What senses are we using when we pop popcorn? She was pretty good with this one with some prompts.  Watching the bag expand with our sight, listening to the pops, smelling the butter.

Then we used our sense of taste by adding different flavors to the popcorn - sweet and salty, while feeling the popcorn as we mixed it!

KT joined us for the popcorn tasting!

 So did Grumpy!

 KT is our chicken whisperer....

Our final activity was making cupcakes - the perfect thing for exploring our sense of taste.
KT and Joss worked together on the mixing!
And each on decorated 6 cupcakes - of course KT's had shark fins.

 Joss's were sprinkle city!

And finally we ended the day with a nice long swim.  Joss has lost her fear of water and is starting to act like a  little tadpole! Her latest thing is to try to touch the bottom of the pool.  She started with her feet, which was pretty easy.  She's currently working on getting down far enough to touch the bottom with her hand.

KT's working on doing hand-stands!

Next week we're exploring our sense of touch!

Mimi's Summer Day Camp - Our Senses (Taste) - Tuesday

Tuesday, June 12, 2018

Summer camp is finally here! This year Joss is with me, and KT is working with Grumpy on several projects.
Joss and I were exploring all about our sense of taste this week.  We started out talking about all of our five senses, and Joss cut out some popcorn to make a poster. She decorated each one (especially with glitter - her favorite thing!)

Next we made some powdered candy using some concentrated flavors - Joss made grape and raspberry candy. She liked the grape the best.
We used a little kit to explore several things about taste, and she even made her own fizzy flavored soda.

It was time for a trip to the library, and KT decided to take a break and go with us, especially once she learned about their new playground!

We got home and had some lunch. Joss and I took a break and went out to watch Grumpy and KT work on a birdhouse.  Grumpy is teaching her how to use some of her new tools.  Her favorite is the hammer!

Joss and I then worked on a Taste Test, using a blindfold.  There were several small bits of foods that taste sweet, sour, salty, and bitter.  She put them on her tongue and then tried to guess what they were and what they tasted like.

And our final activity was a tea tasting! We brewed four different cups of tea, and tasted them first without any additives. Then the girls decided what they wanted to add to make them taste better.  You guessed it - sugar won that one. Ha! But we tried lemon, maple syrup, cherry syrup and honey.

Time for a swim! I didn't get very many pictures since we were having so much fun!
