Fall/Winter Garden 2019 - September 29 Two more garden beds done!

I've been working non-stop the past two days to get more of the fall/winter garden in. I've finished Bed C2 with kales, beets and some more onions/garlic.

If it looks like I'm packing it in in these beds, that's because I am. I don't want to give weeds a chance to see daylight! Also, this may sound like a lot of kale, but there's only one foot of each variety. I have so many and I love kale, so why not!

Bed C2:

Today I planted Bed C3:

Hong Tai Pak Choy - Facebook Garden Group
Yellow Heart Choy - Facebook Garden Group
Extra Dwarf Pak Choy - saved seeds

Only one more bed, C4, to do later this coming week. Tomorrow I plan to finish the Squash House. The peas are already coming up!

Fall/Winter Garden 2019 - September 27 One bed down, three to go!

Well, I finished putting in the C1 yesterday. The heat is still just brutal. I can only be out there for about an hour at a time.

I finished planting all of the spinach:

At the end of the bed I finished up with some shallot/onions:

A few of the peas are already starting to show up!

The second bed is filled (thanks to John!) and ready to go - I'll be planting it on Saturday!

Fall/Winter Garden 2019 - September 24 Finally Started!

I've officially planted out for the first time -- that felt so good to get started! John's been working on the new raised beds in Garden C for me.

We had to basically do a restart in that bed since it's the one that drowned in the Spring and weeds just took over. There will be three 3'x8' beds and one 3'x10' bed there.

While he's been doing that, I've reworked the soil (adding new soil and my mix of bat guano, worm castings and azomite rock dust) in the Squash house and started planting the fall peas:

I'm hoping I'm not too early with these peas since its still so hot, but there is shade on the squash house, so hopefully they won't suffer.

I planted a few greens along the outside of the larger beds in front of the peas:

It was very hot and humid today, so only got 1/2 of the first bed done, and one side of the Squash house.  More tomorrow. Trying to beat the heat by going out early and again late in the day, but it's still been unbearable.

Spinach planted today in bed C1:

I have my little cole plants under the shade of the peach tree right now, and they seem to be happy there. They're putting on their second (and third) leaves and hopefully will be ready to plant out next month. I'll be giving them a dose of HastaGrow this week to keep them happy.

And finally, I started about 24 cells of various herbs last week and they're starting to break through.  I have them on the side porch, and will be transplanting them, as they show up, into larger cups soon! Most likely these will be in the greenhouse all winter.

More garden progress tomorrow!

Fall/Winter Garden - September 1, 2019

Today was an exciting day, I started some of the seedlings for the fall garden!
Cauliflower, Amazing - Baker Creek
Cauliflower, Candid Charm (F1) - Territorial Seeds
Cauliflower, Green Macerata - Baker Creek

Cabbage, Chiriman Hakusai - garden group
Cabbage, Pai Tsai - garden group
Cabbage, Red Dragon (F1) - garden group
Cabbage, Cour Di Bue - garden group
Cabbage, Golden Acres - garden group
Cabbage, Copenhagen Market - garden group

Broccoli, Raab - garden group
Broccoli, Calabrese - The Seed Guy

Choy Sum, Purple - garden group
Cauliflower, Snowball - The Seed Guy

These trays are inside now, it's just too hot in the greenhouse right now. Once they sprout, I'll put out in the potting garden in the shade and they should be fine! Looking forward to putting in the fall garden in a few weeks!

End of the Spring/Summer Garden

Not the most productive garden I've ever had, but considering the over-abundance of rain in the early spring, John's multiple trips to the hospital, and the under-abundance of rain in the summer, I was lucky to get anything! My biggest regret is letting the weeds take over, it's been hard to wrangle the garden back from them.

We had a terrible fruit year - the peaches were barely there. Very few mulberries and elderberries. A fairly nice blackberry year, though, it was a bright spot!

Tomatoes, just about 76 pounds! Happy with them this year, so hopefully I can build on what we did this year!
