The garden is in the summer heat doldrums. Some have totally ended their life cycle, and some are in a holding pattern until the heat lets up some.
We've started harvesting corn - the Incredible and Jackpot corn are both doing very well.
All of the peppers are finally kicking in and I'm starting to bring in the Red Sweet Cheese peppers. They are very good peppers, a nice thick wall and sweet. These are in the pimento family.
The okra is also coming in - a little at a time.
The cotton is not doing well this year - this is the green cotton and it is T I N Y! But already flowering and forming boles.
I'm also bringing in the dried cowpeas and the dried beans, a few every day. These are calico crowder peas.
For the first time we're seeing some grapes on the vines. They look nice, but are already drying on the vine. I think we'll harvest and see what we can get with what we have.
That's about it for now. It's HOT folks!

Mimi's Summer Day Camp - Our Senses (Smell) - Thursday
Thursday, June 28, 2018
Today was our first field trip -- a movie day! We went to see The Incredibles 2. It was very good, a good second movie in the series.
After the movie, we went to the Longhorn Cafe for lunch in Boerne.
Back home we had just enough time to make the "smelly" rice candles, and then it was time for swim!
A very quick camp day! Next week we're having company from Florida, so we're probably just spending time with them for camp days and having fun. We'll be back to our "senses" the following week!

Jossie was spelling out "AMC "the whole time we were there -- she found their logo all over!

Mimi's Summer Day Camp - Our Senses (Smell) - Tuesday
Tuesday, June 26, 2018
This week we're talking about our sense of smell. We started the day by making smelly rice! First, we colored a cup of rice with about 2 teaspoons of hand sanitizer and 4 drops of food coloring. Stir, stir, stir. Then she made two other colors, for a total of three.
Next, Joss sample smelled several different spices and food flavorings, to see which she wanted to use. She ended up with pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and almond flavoring, one to each colored rice.
Next we spread them out and put them out on the porch to dry while we went to the library.
KT took a break from working with Grumpy outside to go to the library with us. She's getting a lesson in using the pressure sprayer to clean furniture and the pavilion, and in using spray paint today.
After lunch, Joss brought her smelly rice in and mixed it all together in a tub with some other naturals (dried orange slices, pinecones, fall leaves, dried okra). The played with the rice for quite a while, and it smelled fabulous! Just like fall. Then she tried to get the seeds out of the dried okra pods - that took her quite a while!
Next we went out to check on the progress outside - they were almost done. KT did a great job!
Then it was time to swim! Ahhhhh....so cool and refreshing.

She did NOT like the butter flavoring scent!!
